I have a 91 Mercury Topaz and am having some problems.?

When I come to a red light or am in park, my car makes a sort of loud noise and sounds as if it's a human breathing hard, or panting. Then, when i reverse my car during and after i'm done, it shakes/vibrates and makes that loud obnoxious rum rumm noise. If anyone has a suggestion as to what the problem could be i'd be thankful. One more thing, when i'm on the freeway and am driving on a curve with my foot on the pedal my car feels like it jolts and is going to spin out which maybe sounds more dramatic then it is, but my dad said that's because i need my shocks replaced. but i'm really concerned about the first two.
