Theism refers to what you believe. For example, I do not believe in a god.
Gnosticism refers to what you claim to know. For example I think that it is not possible to know for sure that a god does/does not exist.
I would call myself an agnostic atheist.

The dictionary!!!
AGNOSTIC – Does not believe anything can be know about or proved about a god. Thus they can still believe a god exists. This description obviously fits a lot of Christians!!!
ATHEIST - someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one. But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs! They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!!
Like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!!

Lol at Foxgirl,
I am sorry, Foxgirl, but you CAN be a theist and still believe in evolution. The late great Pope John Paul II adapted scriptural documents with scientific face.
I suggest you reevaluate your faith.
Anyway, as for the question, an atheist is one who believes there is no God, while an agnostic is not sure there is a higher power.
God Bless,
