How many layers of dough and shortening are there in puff pastry when you give it four book turns?

Making puff pastry. Starts with one layer of dough, one layer of shortening/butter and another layer of dough.

You then roll it out lengthwise, fold each end into the middle, then fold one end over the top. So now you have what is termed one book fold.

Do the same again 3 more times and you have 4 book folds.

So how many layers of pasty dough and how many layers of butter/shortening are there.

4 books x 3 layers = 12 layers in a 4 book fold.

Same w/ dough.  So 24 layers total.

There are 3 layers at the start. One layer pastry under one layer of butter/shortening and one layer of pastry on top.
Fold left end to the middle fold right end to the middle then fold the lelt over the right. = 4 layers of butter/shortening and five layers of pastry.
Book fold 2 repeat the last operation.
= 17
Book fold 3
= 98
Book fold 4 
= 690
