My dog has been licking his anus and moaning as if he's in pain... I'm worried, what can this be?

Ever since I groomed him a few days ago, I have noticed that my dog has been constantly licking his behind and occasionally screaming at night as if in pain. I took a look at the area and his anus seems to be red and irritated, and it's protruding out very slightly. 

I've heard about anal glands filling up with liquid, but the glands are located at 5 and 7 o'clock in that area, and in my dog it's the entire anus that seems to be inflamed, not just those specific areas where the glands are located.

Does anyone know what this condition might be and how to treat it?

His anal sacs are full and need to be expressed. The inflammation and redness results when your dog licks the area. Expressing the glands is something any vet can do, many dogs require it frequently. Anal glands naturally express themselves when the dog poops, but sometimes the fluid builds up, it's normal. The vet trip won't take long at all, but it'll be stinky! =)

OMG I just saw that the above was 5 years ago !
Same thing with my dog. Tries to lick but too fat acts like anus is itching constantly. Had the glands cleaned out....what is going on ? Ive been putting anti itch stuff nightly sometimes twice a day...helps but is just masking whay ever is wrong. Vets haven't been able to give me an answer. Can't keep affording to take her back in for nothing to be done

If you clipped around his rear while grooming , it is possible you irritated the area by getting too close or burned the area if he hasn't been groomed in a while.  He just kept on licking & inflaming the area worse.  Or it might his glands - either way a vet visit is needed now to make sure he gets better.

Could be Protrusion of Anal tissue (anal and recatal  prolapse)
Apply Benzocaine ointment to reduce pain. clean the tissue and lubricate it with vaseline.  Then gently push it back up through the anus. To prevent recurrence, take pet to vet to intake a temporary purse string suture around the anus to hold it in place while healing. Good luck!  Hope dog is okay.

i am a dog groomer and you can take him to your local groomer or vet to have his anal glands expresses.. its very yuckey but it is just something that needs to be done!

If he was groomed he should have his anal sac emptied. 
If he was groomed the  groomer may have accidentally cut or scratched him and the open sore could easylie caused to get infected. 
Take him to the vet.

Is he pooping normally? Maybe constipated? He could have a blockage and would need to see a vet.
