Inside a hard drive I just took apart I found a small container filled with little balls of something..?

The container is about one and a half centimeters long and about 3 mill wide and its filled with small metallic looking balls, can anyone tell me what exactly element they are and why they are there?

Update:

nah it had its own spot in the drive casing and is not silica gel, I know silica gel! haha

Are they on or near a part of the drive that rotates? If so, they are probably ball bearings, and are probably steel. Are they magnetic? If so, probably steel; if not, maybe silicon carbide.

Probably silica gel, in there as a drying agent to keep the humidity down and prevent corrosion. It is probably left over from when it was shipped and can be discarded.
