Orthodox, What is the doctrine of Diefication?

This was apparently a big deal when Istanbul was Constantinople and the Eastern Orthodox split from the Roman Catholic.

Update:

If I just read John 7 to understand it then anyone could just read John 7 and their would be no Orthodox Catholic split. What is the Orthodox (or Catholic) explanation of John 7?

Update 2:

When Christ prays that those who follow him might be one with Him as He is one with the Father, how is this interpreted in Orthodox tradition?

Update 3:

sorry 17 not 7, I did read the right chapter.

    Peace mate,

    These articles might help:

    http://www.coptictruth.com/rit/theosis/rit07sites_...

    http://www.greekorthodoxchurch.org/theosis_reason....

Please be aware that the Coptic Pope has a book (which I haven't been able to find online unfortunately) which is against man's deification. By this it is meant that we Orthodox are against the idea that man becomes God. Obviously man (a created being) can never become God (the Creator).

The Orthodox concept of theosis (often translated as "deification") refers to the process whereby man draws closer to God and God then conveys His divine attributes (eg knowledge of things to come, deep compassion, wisdom, ability to be in multiple places at one time, etc) upon man. In other words, man becomes like God, but never God Himself.

Hope that helped and may the Lord guide you as you seek Him in humility.

It's clear in John 17 and in the Catholic Catechisms.
