Unable to make car payments after losing a job?

My sister and brother in law just bought a new car 3 weeks ago and just this past Monday he was laid off from work. They won't be able to afford the car payments now with his unemployment. Also she doesn't work and they have a 1 year old and a 3 year old. Any advice would be great.

If they are unable to return the vehicle, they may see if they can make payment arrangements. He may find another job soon, not likely, but always possible. Sometimes the payments can be added on to the end of the contract.

Hope that they are able to just return it and find something used that they can better afford. I am so thankful that we were able to get our truck paid off last summer because both my husband and I are laid off and unemployment isn't enough to cover our mortgage and other household expenses.

Only one thing left to do... take the car to be detailed and then take it back to the dealer to see whether they will take it back.

With any luck they will only lose their down payment, etc and the car dealer is willing to back out of the deal.

They should see whether they have a clause in their contract that allows them to return the car within the first 30 days.

Better to deal with reality fast...
