50mm fan on 60mm heatsink?

I was replacing the fan for my 60mm heatsink but accidentally ordered a 50mm fan. I can attach it onto the heatsink using two screws and it holds pretty stable but it obviously does not cover the entire area of the heatsink. Are there any risks of overheating?

go to cpu manufacturers website to check its allowable operating temps

    get speedfan and prime95

Set the temps in your bios so machine will detect if cpu overheats

run test with prime95 and monitor temps in speedfan

I presume the heat sink is for the CPU? You will probably be only getting half the cooling power with the smaller fan. At best overheating could make your computer shut down. At worse the heat could fry your CPU leaving you with an expensive repair. I would definitely get the 60mm fan.
