any advise on border collie?
i have a 10 week old border collie puppy, i have not owned border collies before and want to make sure i train him and look after him properly, i will be taking him to training classes when he has had his second lot of jabs but what can i do with him at home? he is pretty good with his toilet and goes on the puppy pads but we need to train him to go in the garden and he seems to have already decided he is head of the household!! we have a three year old daughter whom he chases everywhere and nips at her which we expected but need to encourage him not to nip also need some basic home training ie 'off', 'stay', 'leave' etc can anyone recommend a good border collie book as i really want to train him properly and effectively. thankyou

Good for you for planning to take your pup to class, and yes, there's a bunch you can do in the meantime. I've suggested a book by Patricia McConnell as a good book to get started with- she is a fabulous trainer who has both strong experience, and her methods are backed by research. Oh- and she has Border Collies! There are also other books on her website you might enjoy, that give great insight into the canine mind, and she has some training tips and a blog to get you started before your book comes.
I'm also listing some sites on clicker training that can help you get started, and a youtube video introducing clicker training.
Please, especially with BCs, use a positive reinforcement approach to training. This will make training a cooperative effort, rather than a confrontational one. Border Collies are really good at training their humans if left to their own devices, or if training becomes a confrontational experience.

I don't know any boreder collie book's but it is simple for most puppies. For train them to go to toilet in the garden when he needs toilet: e.g. sniffing, pacing, panicking, grab him and take him out side when he does his toilet say good toilet or good boy. I would recommend saying good toilet as if you say good boy when he wees etc when you start saying good boy in the house if he does some training right he will think he's suppose to go to toilet. So that's the training. For the ruling the house (DOMINANCE) thing, i would say, ddon'tlet him up on the: sofa, bed etc. You make sure you walk through the door first, don't share you food with him, only pet/stroke and play with him when you want to not when he decides to. For the nipping just say firmly "NO", and give him a little jab, poke, prode on the shoulder not hard,, just so he can feel it. I WOULD RECOMMEND WATCHING "CESAR MILLAN" DOG WHISPERER. You will see how he jabs the dog not hard and he is very good with dog's. When your at home With him and hes bored play some mind games, eg find the treat, find the person (hide&seek.) Play fetch, training etc.
Hope this helps.
