How politically correct is Scotland?

Hi there,

A while ago, I started posting questions about Scotland, what part of it is best and whatnot. Now, I'm wondering how politically correct it is.

I'm currently in England which is THE most politically correct place in the world. Then a while ago I saw on the news that the Scots were celebrating Robert Burns' birthday. It struck me as odd: here in England, we get fined for hanging the St. George's Cross in our windows and cars (I heard that someone actually went to jail once for doing it) yet other races can hang stuff like the Jamaican or Polish flags and nothing happens to them. YET, the Scottish can celebrate St. Andrew's Day and hang their flag and quote their poets with pride. However, while I was quoting Shakespeare to one of my (Muslim) friends, a plain-clothes bobby came up to us and said "Listen love- you can't do that! It offends Muslims like your friend!" And I KNOW my friend wasn't being offended.

That's another reason I want to move to Scotland (a minor reason compared to my nan being born there)- it doesn't seem as politically correct as England. However, I know every country has political correctness about it, and I wanted to know what sort of political correctness there is in Scotland (if any).

Thnx

I'm Scottish and have lived in Scotland all of my life. Personally I feel that in the last few years the PC Brigade have been getting totally OTT, even in Scotland.

First off though, there is a major distinction between St Andrews Day and Burns night. I for one have no idea when St Andrews day even is (yet could easily tell you when St Patricks Day is!) and so far as I am aware very few people celebrate St Andrews Day formally. Burns night celebrates Robert Burns, who was a poet, not our patron saint.

I've travelled to England a few times over the last decade and I remember the first time I went there how struck I was by the number of England flags people had in their gardens etc. Very few people in Scotland fly saltires, even on Burns night. I personally don't see any problem with flying your national flag and I certainly don't think English people should be punished for it. It's a lot more common down there than up here though. Even when the Scottish national teams play it's rare to see a saltire on a car.

Last summer there was a story in the papers that was PC gone mad. One of the southern Scotland police forces had printed a flyer or leaflet of some sort with a picture of a black lab puppy on it and distributed it to local houses. I think the dog was one of the new police dog recruits or something. However, the police force had to make a FORMAL APOLOGY for these leaflets because they had been distributed to some Muslim households and apparently the Muslim faith believes dogs to be unclean. Personally I find this ridiculous-it's not as though an actual dog was shoved through the letter box. So Scotland has it's ridiculous PC pricks too I'm afraid.

To be honest, I feel that a lot of these policies are put in place by local people who think they are being non-discriminatory. BUT all they are doing is singling minorities out as different by giving them special treatment. I can't speak for everyone but a lot of minority people that I know are embarrassed that British traditions and faiths are censored for their 'benefit' by do-gooders. Local councils put silly policies in place and then minorities get the backlash when nationals get pissed off by them. I feel blanket PCness is the wrong way to go about including minority populations.

Scotland doesn't yet have the same number of minority people as England and maybe this is why the PC level down there is higher. However, don't be fooled into thinking Scotland isn't PC at all-we've had a few moments of 'wtf' in the last few years!

    Hope this helps!

I challenge you to produce one shred of evidence in Support of this ridiculous statement. If you can't I feel its only right that you withdraw this question.

It is not very PC and having a low immigrant population outside the cities we persecute the largest ethnic minority, the English. Fife council ordered then cancelled an order to have a St Andrews flag flying from a window removed, I cant photograph my child's school plays etc, no difference.

I am English and have been living in Scotland for nearly 30 yrs and it*s beautiful, apart from hardly understanding some of the local dialects!..

Yes there are pockets where a few folk hate the English, understandable when one considers history, but I love it and have even grown to dislike the political arrogance of Westminster!

So dont go with the *ought to* or *shouldnt do*, but with the WANT to!..Follow your heart!

Police all over the world serves Governments, not people. Sometimes police people abuses goes against citizens and we can do nothing since we do not fight to have the right to approve laws and its applications.

Go spare your horses, as usual you are running ahead of yourself and getting everything wrong - No one is going or has plans to go to Scotland, so call off your dogs and save wasting your time. Kapish..?

Very, and it's getting worse. I'm Scottish myself and I'd rather live somewhere else in Europe. See, Scotland always has had a healthy mildly socialist bent (as opposed to outright Marxist), but that has been taken advantage of down the last few decades by this vile authoritarian virus that brainwashes the least intelligent of the pseudo-intelligentsia by masquerading as liberality. Both the Left and Right are equally as bad, but currently the Left are far more dangerous. A natural-rights libertarian party deposing the current Westminster government, which won't happen, would at least reduce the damage where it came to upholding PC's war, on a basis of regional basis, against natural human rights.
