I use this free video converter called Any Video Converter Free you can download files from Youtube and Google Video. I've only downloaded videos from Youtube. It works great for me. After you download them to your hard drive you can then convert them to other file formats like avi, xvid, mp4, etc. if you want to. That's what I use it for to convert them so I can play them on my media players. I recommend downloading it from download.com because it's a legit site. Download.com also has other free software that will download videos from Youtube, so you should check the website out anyway.
