Best way to go with CMS or other software?

I am starting an online publication, which may eventually turn into print. It's loaded with features like calendars, blogs, videos, articles, advice sections, forums, etc. Basically, it's like a Discovery Channel website in terms of features, but I want it to look like http://www.backpacker.com./ The only problem is I can't find a drupal theme I like (I decided I don't like it very much at all), and I don't know what else to do. I took a look at joomla for managing all the content, but I am still undecided which way to go. Does anyone know of any way to create a great site with all these features on it? Joomla, another CMS, hand-coded PHP and MySQL, html, css??? I'm pretty lost, and all I know is html, css, and a little PHP. It needs to be easy to edit because of the huge amounts of fresh content per day, but look great, have a good banner, etc. Help?

Is it just the face that you haven't found a theme that you like that is stopping you from using Drupal?

If that is the case, you should see if you can hire a designer to help come up with a unique look for your site. I know that means paying money, but if this is something you want to startup as a business venture, it would be worth the investment.

Both Drupal and Joomla are popular CMS tools. They both have lots of developers and designers who could help you create your site if you are not able to do it yourself. It would just be a matter of sourcing some people to help you out. Both sites will have forums where you can request help and/or quotes from people.

Once the site is setup, it would be easy to edit/add content. The initial setup and design would be your greatest challenge if you are not familiar with the coding and graphic design aspects.

Is your dislike of Drupal solely down to the fact that you can't find a theme you like, or is there more to it than that? I've worked with both Joomla and Drupal, and while they are both great CMS systems, in terms of sheer flexibility, I'd have to say that Drupal wins hands down.

Sure, Drupal lacks a little on the theme side, but creating a Drupal theme isn't as hard as it seems. If you know html, css and a little PHP then you've got what it takes to get started with developing your own theme. Have a look at http://drupal.org/theme-guide/6

Well, Ive used Joomla for a lot of time, but I didn't really like it (I had old v1). Since upgrade was not possible, I rather stopped complicating and divided my site in 2 sites.

1st: Simple HTML website for my projects http://www.jan1024188.com/

    2. Wordpress Blog for my personal stuff http://www.jansblog.net/
