Rewriting is the key to improving your work. I primarely write poetry (some fiction also). It is not uncommon for me to do 40 or more rewrites on a given piece. The key to rewriting though seems to be to let the work sit for a few months between rewrites to give you needed perspective.

Always always always rewrite as much as you possibly can. You have to. If you can write it you can write it better. Rewriting is over when you've reached the absolute deadline.
