Do auto warrantys cover previous damage?
I just bought a 2006 Saturn Vue "As Is" and two weeks later, find out that it needs a $2000 repair. I fought with the dealership who sold it to me, and finally they said they would buy me an auto warranty & they should cover it. Is this legal? It sounds kind of like fraud to me, to make a claim on a previous problem.

I've always purchased an extended auto warranty for every vehicle I've owned in the last 5 years. I used to get them from the dealer, but lately it's less expensive to get them from a auto warranty company. http://www.simpleautoquotes.com/Auto-Warranty.html They offer free quotes, so it can't hurt to see how much one would cost for your automobile.

If you bought a used vehicle from a dealer "AS IS" then your just plain and simply out no matter how minor or serious of problems you may have when you drive the car off the lot. Most good dealers will go to great pains to explain the warranty coverage so there are no misunderstandings. Most states require a window sticker that spells out what warranty coverage is provided or if the vehicle is sold "AS IS".
It appears the dealer is trying to cover his butt and keep you from being upset by offering an alternative that they really don't have to do. You could be left out in the cold and have to pay for the repairs yourself. So whether its fraudulent, or legal or whatever is a great question but if you want your car fixed and paid for by someone else you best go along. Maybe they made enough on your sale to afford to eat the cost of this coverage, maybe they are just tired of fighting with you or both.
There are many good warranty companies for used vehicles anymore, that cover major repairs for a fairly reasonable rate.

I dont think it is illegal but the "warranty" company wont cover it. It is called pre-existing and not covered.
Source(s): work for an "extended warranty" (aka Vehicle Service Contract) provider. - 1 decade ago
