If Christians say that the bible is the infallible word of god,?
then why did it need revisions, more than 30 councils through the years to decide what to include or not, and so forth? Shouldn't the original Greek [NT] and Hebrew [OT] scripts be used exclusively [if any of them can even be trusted]? NO King James bible, etc.?
Mike: I've read the whole bible, front-to-back.
Ernest S: I've also read the Qu'ran, as well as most of the Buddhist sutras and some of the Hindu vedas. Can you say the same?
And no, I don't recognise any of it as "god's word".
Add: I've also read up a lot on paganism, old and new as well as New Age, Wiccans and even Scientologists...
What can I say, the concept of religion interest me.
Sunsandnrain: and your point is? Those verses you quote still come from the bible, written by men, who could have written anything they wanted. Point is, you *believe* that the bible was inspired by god but yet again, no proof. And if you read the history of the bible it seems highly unlikely...
Flower: LOL! I guess you are referring to my answer to your question about bitterness towards god? Well, well... ;P

Because revised versions make money!
It would be nice to know what the truth was - maybe it started with a first page saying - To my son Jesus, this is my first book of fairy tales, lets hope it sells.

<<Hey christians, Why <snip> word of god?>> Because that's what Scripture is; the Word of God, with only One Authoritative Infallible Interpretation. <<Why do Christians <snip> more church officials.>> No. The Councils NEVER "corrected" Scripture. Having said that, SEVERAL times, councils have reaffirmed which books are deemed Scripture and which are not. <<How is it infallible if it needs to keep being edited?>> The Catholic Church doesn't "edit" the Bible. The Bible canon of today is EXACTLY the same as it was when the Early Church completed assembling Scripture. <<Also, how do <snip> or lied about.>> Church Dogma is not based on anyone's mere opinion. Seriously, you think human historians and scholars know God's Written Word better God Himself? Seriously? You really think that? <<even Church historian <snip> of romantic fables?">> Oh, so that's it! Stay away from the Catholic Encyclopedia. It's not for you. It's actually not for most people. Most people, Catholics included, have less than a casual knowledge of Church history and Dogma. Seriously, you'd have to be a professional theologian; one of your fabled scholars, in order to begin putting the info you get in the Catholic Encyclopedia into context. When the likes of you fool around the Catholic Encyclopedia, well this is what happens - you end up just getting uber-confused. <<So basically they <snip> answer this christians.>> Basically, you've no clue because you're way in over your head with the Catholic Encyclopedia! Based on the gibberish you've been saying, you sound as if you've got no religious background whatsoever. If you'd like to learn about religion, might I recommend you start with a children's Bible!!!!! Seriously! <<Religion is dangerous <snip> preachers of peace>> No, no. If you've proven anything, it's that IGNORANCE is dangerous! <<also the bible <snip> Marcions New Testament.>> HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!! Stop it !! Stop it !! You're killing me!!!!!! Not everything is a conspiracy, you know. Sometimes things are just what people say they are. Case in point, the Bible is the Written Word of God.

The originals don't exist anymore, just like the originals of Josephus, Tacitus, Seutonius, and every other ancient text don't exist anymore. What we have are copies of copies of copies . . . of the originals.
But, I don't see how your question relates to infallibility. Christians don't believe that the Bible needed revisions; the purpose of having the councils was to authoritatively proclaim what was and what wasn't accepted scripture. This happened in the late third century, although prior to that time, the majority of the books of the New Testament were already accepted among Christians. The Gospels, most of the Pauline letters, and most of the catholic epistles were not in dispute (as we know from the listings in the Muratorian canon, Athanasius, Augustine, Jerome, Origen, and others).

If the Bible is indeed the word of God, (which I believe it to be) then be assured that God's hand was working through these councils when it was written and revised as you call it...
The bible can defend iteself and the words contained within.. It needs no defense except itself.. Try reading it one day, you may get an eye opener.

If you have read the Bible from front to back and not recognised it as God's word what does that say about you?
Edit :
Thank you for your comments.
The mysteries of the Bible cannot be discovered or understood by intellectual investigation or personal experience. As you will know from your reading. God Himself must make them known.
That you cannot recognize the Bible as God’s revelation shows you what you are and the place from which you must start.
I wish you well in that endeavour.

The bible is the truth...oh wait i didn't really answer your question did I?
oops sorry, I hate it when ppl give a answer to a question that does really pertain to them, for example...why are you bitter towards God?
I guess if one is not, then the ?? does not pertain to them..lol
I will think about this ?? and come back w/ my OPINION :)

Great point, this is why you cannot trust this text, or any other religious text to be precise. Even the "original" Bible was written by humans, supposedly influenced by God/Holy spirit, so human errors could have been made.

I believe that God's Word is infallible. I believe that the bible contains God's infallible Word. Does that make the book infallible? I guess there may be room for a wee bit of speculation, to that effect. However, in the long run, the Scriptures satisfactorily defend and prove themselves.

The decision "what to incude" was made by the early 'church' under gods spirit by the end of the first century. All the present 66 books we accept today were part of the earlierst catalogues available.
Later councils simply "rubber stamped" and already established biblical canon.

God is a big God, not a little God, and if nothing shall be impossible with Him, then it is a small thing that He can make His Word to continue as He will.
