What bit do I use for my horse?

I have a horse that does not like just about any kind of bit. She will not turn left and runs backwards throwing her head. She has had her teeth checked and wolf teeth removed. I use as little hands as I can riding her as she is extremely light. Generally the stronger the bit, the worse she acts. She rides fine in a mechanical hackamore, but I can't show her in that. The only bit she likes is a Chris Cox fixed D-ring snaffle like this http://www.chris-cox.com/catalog/product... but soon she'll be too old to show in that and will have to have a shanked bit. What can I use instead? I really don't want to buy dozens of different bits.

Update:

A bitless bridle is not 'legal' either. She can be in a ring snaffle or bosal until she is 6, then she has to be shown in a shanked bit.

You can use a shank snaffle like these, for showing.

The copper mouth or sweet iron should help in the transition.

A really good transition snaffle is this:

This is the one I use. It is very gentle on the mouth. You CANNOT use this in a show! It is considered a gag bit, but it is very mild with limited slip.

Have you tried a short shank, shallow port curb? I didn't show my Arabians, but many of them have very shallow mouths and a broken bit would hit them in the top of their mouths any time you put pressure on the reins. The fact that she goes well in a hackamore makes me wonder if that isn't her problem. I would suggest going to a tack store and talking to a knowledgeable sales person. Ask for their gentlest shanked bit. They might also allow you to take a few to try on the condition you bring them back clean. The tack store I went to suggested the short shank, shallow port curb for my cranky mare. She was fine ridden with a halter, but fought the broken bit snaffle I had her in. She made the transition to the curb with no problems. The only other thing I can think of would be to try something that can changed from snaffle to shank. good luck

have you thought about a bitless bridle?

My old arab is the same. He likes to be ridden in either a hackamore or a halter (neither of which I can use when I show him) Fortunately as I generally stick to endurance I was OK until I decided to do a little dressage. My boy doesn't like the bit but he doesn't react as severely as yours. He will just chomp and chomp till we take it out.

I tried him in a bitless bridle and he works fine in it...
