My life has always been affected by these things. My mom died when I was 12 and my father had been working out of state for a few years so I was in charge of the family home. It was a duplex and my grandparents lived on the other side so no one questioned this arrangement. It was just my brother and I who lived there. My grandparents were very old so I had to quickly learn how to cook, clean, pay bills, wash clothes etc.etc.

When my brother graduated high school, he joined the Air Force. I was still in high school. I was lucky enough to get three college scholarship offers but they were all for out-of-state schools. Although it broke my heart at the time to refuse these offers, I realized that if I accepted, neither my brother or I would have a "home" to eventually come back to. My grandparents has died and no other relatives had ever expressed any interest in our well-being.

Then, I married and had three children in five years. I made it my mission and life's goal, to ensure that they all were afforded the opportunity for a college education no matter how difficult it might prove with our financial situation. And it happened. They all have their degrees (one even has a master's), and they are all living well even in these difficult times.

In retrospect, I would not change anything that I chose to do. My brother benefitted as well as my children from circumstances that affected my life.

I guess anyone with kids knows about the sacrifices that parents make for them - so I'd say my kids have made the usual impression on my life, nothing out of the ordinary. My ex husband was very controlling, so that was the most impressive amount of effect that someone else's desires have had on me ! Now, at this stage of my life, no...they are not adversely affecting me at all. The kids are both settled with families, my ex is making someone else's life a misery, my new husband is lovely and giving....and I'm a free agent !

Who really knows ? I suspect that my marriage and my responsibilities that maintain my lifestyle have had a definite effect on my life in a very positive way. My Sweetie is level headed and is a very responsible, down to earth partner and she has been my greatest blessing. I shudder to think what I could have done or would have done without her. She has always desired and needed me to straighten up and fly right and I have done the best I could.
