I need a simple flat bread recipe?

My family usually buys flat bread at the store for passover, but this year I want to make it from scratch... does anyone have a simple, but good recipe??

Thanks.

I am from India. But I find Pita to be easiest flat bread to make. Atta is whole-grain wheat bread flour. You may just use whole wheat flour.

Indian breads are normally cooked on stove-top griddle. You need to develop a knack for doing that. To me baking in oven is much easier.

When you roll out the bread and you can't really make a perfectly round cookie, Cheat. Use the lid of a coffee can and a knife to cut-out the perfect round cookies.

Try it. It is the simplest recipe. Happy Passover!

    Pita Bread Recipe

Pita bread is not Indian, but this flat bread is made similar to a Naan. The recipe will illustrate the similarities. We will Pita breads with Indian bread flour (Atta) and Ghee.

    1. Warm water (100ºF to 110ºF): 1¼ Cup

    2. Active dry yeast: 1 teaspoon

    3. All Purpose Flour (Maida): 3 Cups

Divided in to 2, 1½ Cup each

    4. Salt: 1 Tablespoon

    5. Vegetable oil: 1½ teaspoon

    Flour for dusting and rolling

    Method

    Yeast Mixture

    1. Stir dry yeast in warm water.

    2. Make a well in 1½ cup of Atta. Add water to form dough. Mix well.

    3. Let it stand in a warm place for 90 minutes or till the dough has doubled in bulk.

    Bread Dough

    1. Mix remaining 1½ cup of Atta and salt.

    2. Add oil and yeast mixture and knead together for about five minutes.

    3. Gather dough into a ball. Brush the ball lightly with oil. Cover with a damp kitchen towel or plastic film wrap.

    4. Let it stand in a warm place for 90 minutes or till the dough has doubled in bulk.

    5. Divide the dough in 8 parts and form them as a ball. Each ball will make one Pita bread

    Baking

    1. Preheat oven to 450º F.

    2. Roll out a ball into 6 to 7" diameter disk with the thickness of about three Nickels ( 5ç coins).

Place on a un-greased baking sheet.

    3. Bake about 6 to 8 minutes till the breads are puffed up and lightly brown. Repeat till all the Pita breads have been made.

Chappatis are the flat bread for you. A nice soft Indian flat bread thats cheap and oh so good. You can even make them ahead of time roll them out and leave them till it's time you want to cook them, don't forget a little parchment paper or waxed paper between them to keep separate. Ingredients: 1 cup unbleached white flour (bleached, unbleached... whatever.) 1 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon poppyseeds 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup melted butter Method: 1) set 1/4 cup of white flour aside. combine remaining flours, salt and poppy seeds in bowl and stir well. 2) Add water and stir till moisture is absorbed, then turn out and knead about 5 minutes. Use put aside flour to flour surface while kneeding (it will also be used when rolling out bread ) 3) Divide dough into 10 equal parts,8 for really large ones. and form into and round a ball as you can.Roll each ball into a very thin circle, or what ever shape is best for your application. Now they can be stacked and refridgerated till your ready to cook them. 4) Cook each side of the Chappati in an ungreased skillet or cast iron pan. I like the cast iron pan best but both work.Chappati is done when each side is showing brown spots. Now brush each side with melted butter and roll in tea towel. You can even put them in a low oven to keep warm till your ready. I love them and got through my lean school years on them. Taste great and fit the budget.Enjoy. Tanya

Flour tortillas are easy and simple. Flour, lard or shortening like Crisco. If you need a little rise but a little baking powder in.
