Why do anti-gay-marriage people care so much about this issue?

I'm not trying to start a crazy flame war or anything, I'm seriously just trying to understand. What stake do you have in whether or not gay people get married, and how do you think it will actually effect your life?

Answers that don't count:

-Churches would have to marry gay people, which infringes freedom of religion. (Because churches wouldn't have to do that BECAUSE of freedom of religion)

-It's gross. (I think all kinds of things are gross. Like mustard. But I don't think it should be illegal.)

What makes you stand out in the freezing rain holding a "No gay marriage" sign for hours? What is your motivation?

Update:

So it's the "slippery slope" argument and the "the dictionary is as sacred as the Bible" argument? Neither of those make much sense to me.

Most people who do not support gay marriage have no valid arguments against it. The debate that gay unions would open the concept of marriage to polygamy and other types of unions is a bogus one, and, as (like you mentioned) it does not have to involve church sanctification. If people are so concerned about the sanctity of marriage, why not make it harder for straight people to divorce? Rush, Newt, etc. would have a difficult time with that prospect wouldn't they?

It's sad and its just about ignorance.

They like to use religion, and "GOD HATES GAYS"

Well I don't know what kind of God they have, but my God loves everyone just how he made them, and I think he would dismiss someone who sat in judgement of others, like gay bashes rather than a gay, who is spreading love.

Two people getting married doesn't affect anyone but the two people.

I'm down with gay marriage just as long as you let me marry my dog.

I mean what gives we love each other. Whats your reason to be against it? Because its wrong and immoral? Oh yeah like I've never heard that before.

It's mostly about the word "marriage".

It is a religious word which means the union of a man and a woman.

I don't really care if gay people are together or not. But it shouldn't be called "marriage."

Throughout the millennia over which the concept of "marriage" has developed, it has always been opposite-sexed (it included relationships such as one man/one woman, one man/several women, several men/one woman, and several men/several women).

This concept of "marriage" has been embodied in both religion AND law.

At no time was a same-sex relationship included in the concept of "marriage."

If same-sex people want a relationship similar to "marriage", let them go to their Legislature and request that a new concept be defined (e.g., civil unions), rather than demand that they be included in the concept of "marriage".
