why will John Deere lawnmower not charge the battery?

We replaced the battery because it would not charge, mower will not charge with a new battery. We know the battery is good because we can charge it up and machine fires right up----sounds well and cuts well. but it simply will not charge in the mower----only with charger. it is a John Deere model FB460

Thanks-A-Million for your advice.!

Update:

(edit(

Sorry folks--this is not the 460--the model # is FB 160

Update 2:

Could be alternator is bad or belt is slipping because it's loose.

This may be a way to test the charging circuit, start the engine, the ignition circuit comes from the rotor, itmust be either a magneto or energy transfer, bottom line engine running being carefull put an ammeter between the Positive cable and the battery, will show if there is a charging circuit at work, However the physical wireing installed at the manufacturing of the riding lawnmower must be sound with all fuses circuit breakers , or diodes being good. 9 out of 10 times electrical problems are caused by a bad ground some where. Also the original charging circuit schematic (intended circuit) is a mystery to me.

Most of these are low output systems. 3 amp is normal, 15 with an electric clutch. There is a diode in the line that could be bad. There also is a fuse that could be bad. If you don't have a manual for the tractor talk to the JD dealer and find out how to test the charging system.

I believe this mower uses a combination alternator and starter unit. These systems are very subject to RPM speed and will not charge at low engine speeds. If you have an amp meter you should be able to see the RPM point where the needle moves to the charge side. If not,you likely need to rebuild the alternator.

Since the battery holds a charge, the fault has to be in the tractor's battery charging components. Likely problems are

    1. Loose belt that permits the alternator to slip rather than spin (easy to check and fix).

    2. Defective voltage regulator (this device may perceive the battery to be fully charged when in fact it is not; solution to this is to have it checked and replaced; requires special equipment to test).

    3. Defective alternator (this device may not supply sufficient electrical energy to enable it to charge; solution is replacement or rebuild; requires special equipment to test).

    4. Loose cable from alternator - easy to check out.

The seafoam is a sturdy idea(maximum human beings do not favor to debris with the carb)It feels like you lined each of the bases.except compression try that you will see that if there's a situation once you modify the spark plug.i'd attempt the seafoam beforehand rebuilding the carb.it would steer away from dropping time.
