Ink painting - diluted or thick?

How does one actually paint with ink? Do you use the ink as it comes form the bottle or diluted with water, like some kind of watercolour?

I thought about doing a little experiment and dilute some ink in water to paint with it, and use it just like watercolour.

But I'm not sure if that's the right method. Could you please clarify me on that?

Ink painting does usually refer to what you are talking about, painting like with watercolor, using a thin and watery ink fluid. You can buy India Ink at an art store and it comes mixed specifically for this purpose.

But definitely try out your own technique at home at see how it goes!
