Left 4 Dead Problem...?

Question

I don't play very many video games, so please excuse me if my question is dim :P.

As the title says for itself, I have a problem with Left 4 Dead. After I had finished a level, the doors would not open. I would go over and press "e", like it said, but only the handle bar came off-  the door did not open.

I thought maybe I had to accomplish certain tasks to get to another level, so I started right from the beginning- in the apartments. I got through that level, and entered the subway without problem, reaching the next level. I get to the subway, and the same problem happens as in the previous paragraph. I don't know why it's not letting me through. Do I need to do something specific, that I am not aware of to get to the next level?

Well, I play Left 4 Dead (VERY often) and from what I know there isn't anything special you need to do to get out of any of the safe houses. You just press "E" to take off the bar then soon after the door opens (After pressing "E" a second time)  Also it sounds like you playing on PC, I only play on the 360, so I may be wrong about the button to press to open the door.
 Also If you are playing online, then other online players like to put things in front of the door to strand you there. That happens a lot actually. Oh also there might be a glitch somewhere.

Like what everyone says, you must press E twice. The first is to just remove the object that is on the door. The second press is when you actually open the door. 

They must have did that to ensure you are ready to go outside, otherwise zombies might attack you for opening the door when you did mean to do that.

You must press it twice, once to remove the bar that is securing the door and another to actually open the door.

This was added to insure you meant to press it to open and not accidentally and you get swarmed by zombies.
