Problem of UPS or Power Supply?

I use Samsung 19" Widescreen LCD monitor in a 1200VA UPS. the monitor and ups both are brand new. the ups givers 30+ mins backup. The problem is every 1/10 times my pc is restarted whenever my Power cuts off and UPS runs backup.

First, VA does not equal usable wattage. You get about 60% transference. The rest is lost to heat and other inefficiency.

This means your 1200va UPS will support about 720 watts total.

Start adding up what is plugged into it. How big is the power supply in the computer? Look at the rating on the DC power brick that came with the monitor (or the back of the monitor itself). CRT displays usually demand between 120 and 200 watts, but that LCD could be 35 watts.. it could be 120 watts. Check the ratings on all the adapters for any external drives, printers, etc, etc, etc. It all adds up.

If you are using a 700 watt power supply, and that LCD panel uses 80 watts, you are already demanding the UPS support more than it can... and it will shut down.

However, if your PC is restarting...that is another issue. That means the UPS isn't working right (as long as you are demanding less than it supports) and instead of providing continuous power, it is unstable. If your system switches over to running on the UPS, it should not affect the system performance.

So when your power cuts off and the UPS takes over, your PC restarts? Should not happen. Essentially, the UPS should operating on battery and just continually charging. Not really using electricity for anything except keeping the battery charged. That way, if there is a power failure, your PC won't restart when it switches over. Sounds like a bug in your UPS. If it is still under warrranty, contact the mfgr. and let them know what the problem is. See if they will send you a replacement for it.

  • Problem is in your UPS. Because during Power cut the UPS could not change the power into battery more immediately. It takes long time to change the mode. Probably the culprit is the relay in the UPS.
