How to Shut Down Avast!?
Avast! seems to be reasonably satisfactory. However, really two questions:
Firstly:
How to I shut it down. And I don't mean "Stop On-Access Protection". I mean shut down, dead. No background processes, no scheduled scans, not even a little icon in the lower right, nothing. I suppose I can just kill the associated process, sure, but there must be some method intended to accomplish this.
Second:
How can I set it to no longer start when I reboot? I haven't been able to find the setting to disable this behavior.
Now, just to handle this off the bat, because it seems like any time I see this issue addressed, there always this question:
"Why do you need to close Avast?" etc.
And my answer is, well, just never you mind that. I'm a quite competent computer user, and while perhaps programmers like myself are not necessarily the best experts in security, I feel that I do just fine. Suffice to say, on my computer, I control what goes on. I use the tools at my disposal as I see fit. They don't place controls on me.

Avast has a self-defense mechanism, to prevent malware from disabling it. Will prevent humans too.
Right click the Avast "a-ball" > Program Settings > Troubleshoot > Disable Avast self defense module. Now you should be able to kill the processees in Task Manager.
A simple editting of your Registry will prevent Avast from "starting with Windows".

I'm not too sure if this will solve the problem but just a suggestion as I use avast! myself:
Turn off avast completely through processes and then go into your bootup and turn off all the avast! startup processes/.ini and whenever you start up your computer avast! should stop running. Although this is just common sense I haven't tried it but if it does work, then hopefully my advice helps.
Ciao~

If memory serves me right you can't. It will not let you. If you try to exit completely out it will bawk about it and tell you access denied. I might be wrong in my memory. I grew up and realized there was better. Avast and AVG are to close to being alike to me. There detection and protection rates are pretty sucky. Get Kaspersky or Avira. If your really a programmer you should know better than to use a inferior anti virus that noobs use.

If you are a computer person, won't you get the idea that Task Manager can do it for you. Just end all the AshServ.exe and Ashblah.exe all that. Not just end process but end process tree to end whatever that started it. If it says denied, then somewhere in Avast!'s configuration, you can make it so that Avast!'s process can be ended.
If that doesn't work, then go to advanced computer help.

You know what AVG stands for? It is short for the word "A""V"ERA"G"E
There you have it. Go for Avira-high detection good proactive detection, it's 99.8%, highest of industry.

gee whiz.......get a-squared HiJack free and kill the program,or take your hard drive out and hit it with a hammer, and then do a little dance around it when you've finally succeeded in killing it ,Mr."quite competent computer user". :p
