Track spikes are used to get more traction and bounce off of the ground, so that we go faster. The downside to this is that track spikes are very, very minimalistic. They're very light, and offer minimum support, if at all. You're not supposed to run with spikes when you're injured or recovering from an injury- or just hurting in general. Because there's less support, your bones and joints get much more impact.
I'm not an expert at this or anything, but I do know some stuff. If you use your spikes properly, you can prevent injury. You ONLY use spikes for the pure workout part of training. By this, I mean that you only get your spikes on when you're doing your interval training or working with blocks. Don't use them for warm ups or anything else. You also want your spikes off and your flats on as soon as you finish the interval part of your workout. Like I said above, you don't wear spikes when you're hurting. If you have something like shin pain, wearing spikes will not help at all. It'll only hurt more, since spikes are less forgiving on your body.
If you take care of your body- always ice and stretch at home, and prevent injuries before you get one- using spikes should not have too much of an effect in the long run.
