Are Catholics allowed to have sex during Lent?

I want to know if the Catholic Church recommends or requests sex abstinence for married couples during Lent.

Sure. Why not? Just make sure you are married and not using contraception.

Currently it is only during Lent, but that was not always the case. As most are all saying. -- Pre-Vatican II council, for the past 1,960 years of Catholicism - Catholics could not eat RED meat on ANY Friday. Fish was OK. This was never a Doctrine of the faith, a mandatory thing. It was a tradition or "practice" of the Catholic faith. However, one of the changes that the Vatican II council in the 60s brought into the church was the changing of some of the practices to modernize the faith and make it more 'user friendly' for lack of a better term. Amongst OTHER changes Vatican II allowed...... Catholics could eat red meat on Friday's except during Lent. Church services were no longer purely in Latin, but in the local language of that region. The Priest no longer faced the Tabernacle (Christ) the entire service, with his back to the congregation but could now face forward looking at the rest of the people. Luckily I grew up Post-Vatican II so I have always been able to eat red meat on Fridays, except during Lent.

    Who cares?

I used to go to conservative churches that teach that abstinence crap, and I learned that the leaders of these churches actually crack jokes about 30 and 40 year-old virgins behind their backs. Now I just send my Christian friends to the site below which debunks the whole thing against premarital sex in the Bible. It covers same-sex lifestyles too. I hope it helps you.

There are no obligations of the kind.

People may forgo sex voluntarily, which would be meritorious, but I have never heard of such a thing.

"Sorry honey, it's Lent" is sort of a pathetic excuse. My Anglican wife, who also observes Lent would just laugh, or alternatively, if I was serious, be very angry.
