The Second Amendment guarantees the "right of the people to keep and bear arms". The reason is so the people can be the instrument which regulates the military. This is borne out by statements from our founding fathers; Tench Coxe; "If a time of public contention shall hereafter arrive, the firm and ardent friends to liberty may know the length to which they can push their noble opposition, on the foundation of the laws. Should their country's cause impel them further, they will be acquainted with the hazard, and using those arms which Providence has put into their hands, will make a solemn appeal to "the power above." " "As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people, duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which shall be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow-citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms." The Founders even discussed the idea of our current National Guard, and how the Second Amendment is to protect us from their abuses. John Smilie ; "Congress may give us a select militia which will, in fact, be a standing army - or Congress, afraid of a general militia, may say there shall be no militia at all. When a select militia is formed, the people in general may be disarmed." The warning was that, without the Second Amendment, the Federal Government could form a national militia, called back then a select militia, and use that as an excuse to disarm the people. The called that one right, since people today are trying to use the National Guard as an excuse to disarm the people

It originated because oppressed people have historically always been disarmed. When any government grows to become a mom and dad entity and seeks power over the population, it always disarms the people leaving only the criminal element to have firearms - albeit illegally. Also, in the vastness of the early US, people had to hunt for themselves, and also defend themselves on the frontier. This is how the 2nd Amendment became established. At one time, the US government had to seek approval for functions from the citizens. This was the intent of US establishment. Now however. people have become complacent and look to government for rights (and the inalienable rights are forgotten). Many people still believe that armed citizens can act as a balance between a government now larger than ever, and the citizens.
