What home-made bird repellent can I use on my flower pots?

Birds can't have enough of my seedlings. I put a bird net, but they still can reach for the seedlings at the edge of the pots. Since I live in a apartment and I can't make my pots look bad in front of the building, I am thinking of using a repellent. Is there anything that can be made home?

I read somewhere that Spray Starch produces fumes that birds don't like. Does it last long or should I give it everyday?

Try an artificial owl perched nearby. The kind with the head that swivels is pretty effective. You can get them at most garden centers.

Plastic Owls, Snakes and shiny things that move in the breeze scare birds. The shiny things are subject to being taken by small children.
