can you suggest a material to put on a pitched roof to hold soil for planting?

I am looking for suggestions to green a pitched roof 25o], preferable cheap or recycled that can contain 2-4 inches of growing medium. Something cellular would be ideal so the soil doesn't wash out.

Update:

thanks Jane, but I do want to bother as I don't have much garden, it is also a widespread method, using turf but I don't have that option and I want to grow something different.

Update 2:

Thanks CB, looks good although I'm looking for cheap!

Scott, I,m a builder and the roof is fine [for some reason the joists are over sized] and its a little Jack,

    I would bother too!!!

Not just to increase garden space, but the environmental benefits are terrific!!

Go to the following website, greenroofs.org is a terrific resource!

    http://www.greenroofs.org/index.php?option=com_fro...

They have MANY different products available, i.e.roof blocks, green packs... the list is extensive.

    Good Luck!!

First consult an architect to be sure you're pretty roof can take the weight or it may replace your carpet and give you a skylight. You don't have any Airedale puppies? RScott
