That was not a gas mileage car. On the road, driving gently, you could get in the 15-18 MPG range. In town you may get 8-12. If you take advantage of the engine power, and drive it hard, that car will pass anything on the road except a gas station. You could end up in the 5 MPG range

Batteries and alternators tend to go bad together. Get into a warm garage if you can to check a few things. Check battery ground and alternator cables. Replace or trim and clean if badly corroded. Check alternator output. You can use an ammeter, but a voltmeter is easier,. When the car is running, check battery voltage with accessories off it should read around 14v. Kudos to you for keeping a '78 Eldy on the road. I love those cars. Your fuel bill must be enormous, however. If all that is good, you may need a new starter. They are cheap for that car and easy to put in. I have a feeling your alternator is toast, since your car stalled and would not restart, and you have a fairly fresh battery. But check your cables too. They could cause the same problem. OR LUCIFER MAY HAVE GOTTEN INTO YOUR CADILLAC AND REPOSSESSED IT!!
