How about
The Amber Alert System
That has saved many children lives. It is named after a girl named Amber who was kidnapped and brutally killed. Just google "The Amber ALert System" and the history of it should come up.
None of your classmates probably will not think to use this or would think of it has an invention.WHen a child has been abducted police put out an amber alert through the media. So just about every channel at the bottom of the screen an announcement is stated telling viewers a child has been taken, what the child was wearing, and sometimes who may have taken the child. It also gives a number for people to call if they have seen or may see the child.

The most significant invention of the modern world was the telegraph.
Until that, all messages had to be carried by hand. The Pony express was as good as it got, but compare a month or so to a few minutes -- the effect was massive. Dropping the transatlantic cable did the same for communications between the US and Europe.

Nikola Tesla would be a great inventor to use. He is considered the father of AC power (the power used in your home). His work and experiments in electricity made many things possible that we have today. One of his inventions was called the Tesla Coil. He hoped with this device he could power homes "wirelessly". I have seen one of these in real life. You can hold a flourescent tube near it and it will actually light up. Do a Google or Wikipedia search on him if you want to know more.

How about writing how the cell phone has changed the world. Or the automobile. Or the invention of the atomic bomb. Or cigarettes. Or the airplane. Or the wheel.
