Oakland A's catcher Gene Tanner used a personal apparatis that was first used by a catcher, what was it?

This will blow your minds, I won a pair of tickets by answering this question..

Update:

OOps gene tenace im soory you all

im giving you the answer, the key word use is personal apparatis, therefore its not the commonly used equipment. the answeer is "a tupae". thats right mr tenace would go at bat with this on as well and when he hits the ball running to first base his tupae normally would either fall off or partically fall off, he maintained wearing his tupae will wearing the normal catching equipment as well

do you mean gene tenace? was he the first to use a batting helmet on his head, to protect his noggin, while catching?

There never was player named Gene Tanner.

    Catcher, pitcher or anything else.

Therefore, he invented an invisible device to fool people into believing that a phantom player existed and played for Oakland.
