With double fastening horse boots does the top strap still face to the back?

I have always done up all my horse's boots with the fastening from the front towards the back as this was how I was taught many moons ago as a child. However, I have now been told that boots with double fastenings where the second one goes over the first should have the top fastener facing forwards. Is this correct?

I actually called a few boot manufacturers about this when I had the same problem (including WoofWear) and they all told me that the double fastening boots are designed to have the top strap facing forwards, as this distributes the pressure evenly and there is not too much bulk under one part of the leg. Single fastening boots fasten pointing to the back.

As it was explained to me -

boots are fastened towards the back because this avoids over tightening and so protects the tendons from undue pressure. In the case of double fastening boots it really doesn't matter which way the straps point because, in theory, you can't over tighten them anyway.

that's what I was told anyway.

I still fasten them with the top strap pointing backwards though.

In my experience, the straps still face towards the back. The first strap should face forward, with the top strap folding over towards the back. Are the boots labelled? That way you can be sure that they are put on correctly.

Every strap should face the the back end. Boots have been designed for with quick release in mind. All the open straps should be towards the back.
