97 Grand Prix GT- Can't shift from Park unless I use the Shift Lock Release? Mechanics-Please Help!!?
It just started doing this about a week ago. Shifting between any other gears is fine but I can't shift from Park without pushing down the Shift Lock Release. I tried looking in the Owners' Manual but it doesn't get into why one would have to use this Release.

I assume that it shifts in all gears just fine EXCEPT to come out of "park", right?
If so, it sounds like the shift interlock solenoid is not working. Check to see if the brake lights are working. (the shift interlock uses the brake switch to activate solenoid) If they are not check fuses. If the lights work then check for power to the brake switch with a test light.
You may need the help of a wiring diagram or repair manual to figure this out.
Anything more in depth than to check for power and fuses may be something that you will need to take to a reputable repair shop.
Hope this helps.

Bigg Dogg is 100% correct.
I had this exact same issue on my '99 Grand Prix GTP. It was the solenoid mentioned. It is housed in the steering column.
I had to wait about 30 seconds or so before it would shift from "Park".

One of your fuses is blown. I had this problem, but I fixed it 4 days ago. Good luck, and God bless you.
