Is there a smokey odor? How old? Also a model number would be nice. Maytag could mean 4 different manufacturers in the past 9 years. I'll edit my answer when you get the info...

    **Edit**

I was hoping you would tell me it was a different vend! Grab the adjatator and move it like it was washing. Theres a possibility that the adjatator splines are stripped. If this is the case you will need and adjitator. your washer only has one belt, so we know that is fine, mainly because your washer is spinning and pumping the water out. Is the motor running while is supposed to adjatate? I'm really thinking that the transmission may be your culprit...
