Can my husband put my sister under his Tricare Prime Insurance? (Military)?

My sister lives with us now. She does not have any disabilities. Is there a way that we can say that we are taking care of my sister so that we can get her under my husbands Tricare Prime insurance? What about dental?

Unless she is a minor and you get custody of her she cannot become your dependent. If she is a minor then you must get full custody of her. She would then qualify for Tricare and United Concordia dental as any child dependent would. If she is over 18 then she cannot become your dependent at all.

If she is under the age of 18, you will have to have proof (court orders or legal custody papers) that you are her legal gaurdians. As an adult, unless she is in school full time or there are other needs, it would be doubtful..you would have to provide proof that you have been financially supporting her (more than 50% of her costs) for a period of time before she would be eligalbe. Your spouse should talk to his command...they can tell him what the criteria are and what he would need to do to have her declared a dependent...because only dependents can qualify for Tricare.

no. adding secondary dependents is very hard and you must prove she cannot take care of herself at all. if she is a Minor you would have to get legal custody of her. if she is not, then you have no options.

besides secondary dependents do NOT Get Tricare Prime. they are Space A on base( below retirees) and CANNOT be seen off base at all so you would still need to provide insurance some other way.

as for Miles suggestion on secondary dependent paperwork..It take a whole helluva lot longer than 20 minutes. the process can EASILY be two or three YEARS long. beginning with being able to declare her on your taxes.

Wow, I worked for Tricare Prime long ago..I don't believe your husband can put your sister as a beneficiary unless you too have adopted her. But it's been awhile since I worked for them, rules may have changed.

Other than what everyone here has already told you, the best advice I could give is go to your nearest DEERS office, have them give your a secondary dependency claim packet, and submit your request the dependency claims office at DFAS. The worst thing they can tell you is no, and it may be worth you taking the 20 minutes to fill out the paperwork. What is it gonna hurt?

  • not unless you have custody having a roomate doesnt make a difference with insurance

He either needs to adopt her or needs to have court ordered legal custody of her before they will allow him to add her to his DEERS.

    No he cannot...

Remember the Military is not a Social Welfare Program...

No, not unless you adopt her as a child.
