how much should i feed my border collie pups?

i have two male border collie puppies from different litters, one is 17 weeks old and the other is 12 weeks old. i was feeding my 12 week old pup 40g of dry food 4 times a day but he is still very slim while i feed the 17 week old 50g four times a day and he is a chunk (i have only had the older one a week and the previous owner gave him a "bowlful" three times a day) im worried that they are not getting enough or too much?? i feed my younger boy on james wellbeloved puppy dry mix with a tablespoon of butchers puppy wet food and i am weaning the older boy off his morrisons dry mix with pedigree chum dry and a tablespoon of wet. pls help ta x

Update:

i might add that the reason they are on ifferent food is because i had the pedigree chum for the younger one but it gave him a poorly tummy therefore had nearly a whole 6kg bag left and the previous owner of the older one had said that he had been on pedigree chum when she got him from the breeder. also i feed them at the same time in seperate rooms until they are finished eating, both been wormed and flead to date.

Update 2:

i might add that the reason they are on different food is because i had the pedigree chum for the younger one but it gave him a poorly tummy therefore had nearly a whole 6kg bag left and the previous owner of the older one had said that he had been on pedigree chum when she got him from the breeder. also i feed them at the same time in seperate rooms until they are finished eating, both been wormed and flead to date.

Did you see both parents of either dog? Some collies are finer boned than others so it's best not to compare their sizes as your older one may be naturally chunkier. In my opinion Pedigree Chum is a poor choice for a young collie because it's very rich, has artificial ingredients and usually causes stomach problems and it's vital young pups get a quality diet so I would not wade through your 6kg and then change - do it as quickly as you think he can cope with and stay with it for at least 6 months. It may cost a bit more but will benefit your dogs in the long run. The feeding guidelines on these packs are generally a good rule to follow.

I would feed 3 meals a day for both of them and in a couple of months just feed them twice a day keeping a regular eye on their weights. Depending on the amount of exercise they get in the future and whether they get treats/chews adjust their food accordingly but individually.

As for feeding in separate rooms, I think it would be better to feed them in the same room, at each end of the room standing in between them to stop any squabbling and keep them in their corner. Over time, bring their bowls closer together so they learn to respect eachother's space. This will solve many problems with rivalry in the future especially where treats/training are concerned. They will learn that you are the boss of their food and accept it! It's much easier to do it while they are young than wait until they are adolescents as you will have a much harder job stopping the more dominant one having a pop at the other one around food.

Best of luck with them, to me they are the best breed by far, just remember you need to be more intelligent than them at all times - it's not always easy!

You can feed them the same food out of the two foods you are feeding the James is the better one, feed the amount recommended on the back of the back to start As they get older if you are properly exercising them they will need a bit more than what is recommended on the bag, simply adjust. Borders rarely over eat and are not prone to being overweight if exercised, when in doubt feed more. All of my borders run very lean.

As for the difference in the twos weights the chunky one may be eating the others food, or was not dewormed enough time (has he been to your vet since you got him?)

usually on dog food tins / bags they usually say how much to feed them

well usually for a pup its 4 small meals a day

adults have 2 large meals a day

well try swap the amounts around give the younger dog 50g and give the bigger one 40g

im sure someone has told me to give puppies like more food but im not sure who : /

do you feed the 2 dogs at the same time and watch that each eat their own bowl? the older one may be heavier since he was fed much more than the younger one.

read the labels on each dog food container and then according to the activity level also, adjust accordingly.

blue buffalo makes a kind of dog food meant for high energy dogs. But all that means is it is high in calories. I think it is venison flavored. It is in a shiny bag and costs about 3 dollars more than the other flavors. I recommend that. There are lots of healthy natural ingrediants in it instead of fillers. Petsmart carries it.

how about just feeding them the same food, the recommended feeding on the bag?
