Do some dog breeds have naturally bobbed tails?

We adopted a dog in November from the local Humane society that we were told was part Minichature Pinscher - even though at close to 30 lbs, she is well outside the size and weight of that particular breed. We think she looks a lot like a small Doberman Pinscher more than a Miniature Pinscher.

Anyway - she has a short, bobbed tail, which I had kind of assumed whoever owned her first had done when she was born. But is that trait a natural feature of the breed?

Making it even more confusing - she still has all her dew claws, which her vet remarked on.

Update:

We have no idea what breed she is - the Humane Society had her labeled as part Min Pin. We've thought about doing the DNA test - but not sure it's worth it. It's not like its going to affect how we feel about her.

I guess I had assumed that her tail must have been surgically docked when she was born, but then I was confused about why she had her dew claws, since the vet said that would have been easy to take care of when she was born as well. I mean, why dock her tail but not remove those?

For that breed no its not a natural trait as far as I know but there are some breeds that carry the bobtail gene.

She has her rear dews because whoever bred her did not have them done which they should have been.

And are you sure she's not actually a black and tan Manchester Terrier or German Pincher? All three of these breed tend to be confused and labeled Min. Pin

ETA: more than likely she didn't come from a reputable breeder which means the tail could have been easily docked using rubber bands at home instead of going to the vet who would have done the dews at the same time.

If she's nearly 30lbs though I would lean more toward Manchester Terrier as a more accurate guess.

Bobbed is natural, docked is when someone shortens the tail at 1-3 days of age.

Min pins as far as i know are a docked breed, not a natural bobbed breed. Same with dobermans.

There are breeds with natural bobbed tails though.

  • The tails are docked somewhere b/w 1-3 days old. I don't know of any dog breed that are born w/out a tail, unless it has a birth defect.

Pembroke welsh corgis do not have a tail at birth, born with a natural bob. Cardigans do.

A few other breeds have natural bobs, too.

But your dog has had her tail docked.

She has her dew claws because they have not been removed. Tails have to be docked while they are a puppy.

No. Your dog isn't a bobcat for goodness' sake.
