  • Where can I buy replacement covers for electric baseboard heater thermostats?

I have a couple of electric baseboard heaters in my downstairs family room (bi-level house). I've been remodeling the room and unfortunately I broke one of the plastic covers for the thermostat used to control the heaters.

Where can I buy replacement covers? I've looked in Lowes and Home Depot and can't find anything. I'm not looking to replace the actual thermostat - I just need a new cover to go on top of it. (I really don't want to spend the $20-$30 on a new thermostat just to use the cover.)

    The dimensions are:

    4-1/2" Tall x 2-3/4" Wide x 7/8" Deep

The opening for the dial is 1-3/8", with the center of the opening approx 1-5/8" from the top (and about 7/8" between the top of the opening and the top of box).

    Thanks for your help.

  • Could Hermione really free Hogwarts' House Elves?

In Order of the Phoenix, do you think Hermione could really set House Elves free just by having them pick up hats and socks? I have serious doubts that her plot to free the house elves would actually free any of them.

    1) The students are not the Master of any of the elves. That would be Dumbledore (or whoever the Headmaster is). So it seems to me that only Dumbledore could set them free.

    2) I don't consider "being presented with clothes" the same as "picking up an article of clothing". If all it took to free a house elf is it picking up a random article of clothing off the floor, then there really wouldn't be any enslaved house elves. I'm sure, for example, that the laws that govern house elf ownership make specific exemptions for doing laundry. (I giggle a little every time I try to picture Lucius Malfoy, for example, attempting to wash his own socks.)

Hermione's heart was in the right place, but I wonder about her planning here. It just doesn't seem like it would be as simple as she tries to make it.

  • Where can I find more information on Nazi educational propaganda?

I'm looking to do some research into the Nazi educational system and the way they were able to influence/brainwash the young of Germany into following Hitler to the end.

Does anyone have any recommendations for books or documentaries on Nazi education? There's one 6-part series called Hitler's Children that I've already watched, but I was hoping to find some more detailed information.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Does the thickness of a storm door need to match the depth of the brick molding?

I am looking to install a storm door on my home (there isn't one there currently). I used the guides on the Larson website to measure the door opening, but I'm a bit confused on how thick of a storm door I can use.

The brick molding on my front door is 1" thick, which is the minimum recommended thickness according to the website. Does that mean that I can only install a 1" thick door? I was looking at the doors on Lowes website, and it looks like most doors were about 1 5/8" thick (except for the cheapest door, and I don't want to install the cheapest door if I can help it).

Does the thickness of the brick molding determine how thick a door I can install?

  • My dog started vomiting last night?

After I put my dog to bed last night, she vomited a couple of times. I know she did it at least twice. About an hour and a half after I put her to bed, she was whimpering a little in her crate, so I took her out to go potty and noticed a pile of partially digested food in her crate. I cleaned it up, changed the pad in her crate and put her back to bed. This morning, there was what looked like the remnants of vomit in 2 distinct piles on the pad (so she probably threw up 3 times in total).

We fed her breakfast this morning and she threw that up a couple of hours later.

We have a vet appointment for tomorrow morning, which was the earliest we could get in. We haven't changed her food at all lately (we are in the middle of a bag, so it's not likely to be a bad batch). The only new thing we have introduced into her diet is pressed bones - which we bought over the weekend to see if she liked them.

Could it be a stomach bug or something she ate that didn't agree with her? (She does spend a portion of her day in the back yard, so there's no real way of telling if she ate something while outside.) Or is it likely to be something more serious? On our walk this morning, she pooped like normal - except maybe a little less than normal.

Like I said, we have a vet appointment for tomorrow - I'm just concerned. This is my first dog and first experience with this type of thing. (We've had cats for years that have vomited from time to time, but that's just hairballs. And it's never been repeated vomiting.)

  • Do some dog breeds have naturally bobbed tails?

We adopted a dog in November from the local Humane society that we were told was part Minichature Pinscher - even though at close to 30 lbs, she is well outside the size and weight of that particular breed. We think she looks a lot like a small Doberman Pinscher more than a Miniature Pinscher.

Anyway - she has a short, bobbed tail, which I had kind of assumed whoever owned her first had done when she was born. But is that trait a natural feature of the breed?

Making it even more confusing - she still has all her dew claws, which her vet remarked on.

  • Does this count as switching dog food?

We adopted our first dog a month or so ago and had been buying it 1 flavor of dog food - but recently decided to try a different flavor of the same brand due to availability.

Does this mean we have to do the mixing of the two types and gradual introduction of the new food? We went from beef to lamb.

  • Figuring out my computer's specs?

I was checking out the technical specs for Sims 3 to make sure my computer can play it well (it's just over a year old and it was one of the top of the line Gateways at the time), and I'm confused by the processor speed.

The requirement for the game for Vista is:

2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent

I checked my control panel and it says:

    Intel Core2 Quad CPU 6600 @ 2.40 GHz 2.39 GHz

Does that mean that I barely meet the requirements or that each of the quad processors is 2.40 GHz?

(I used to understand computer specs back before the advent of dual and quad processors, but now I'm just lost.)

  • Encouraging new dog to go potty outside in the snow?

Anyone have any tips for getting a dog to go potty outside during a snowstorm?

We brought home a dog from the Humane Society today (our first dog) and she hasn't been to the bathroom yet (been in the house just about 12 hours). She's about a year old.

She does have a cold (snuffling, a little wheezing and snotty nose) that the shelter did warn us about and gave us medicine for. She has barely touched the dry food we gave her (which was provided by the shelter so it's the same type of food she had been eating). She's drunk some water but not a lot.

We kind of figure with her being sick and stressed about being in a new place, she may not eat a lot right away as she adjusts. Is that normal? Especially with her being sick?

We've taken her outside a few times, but we are in the middle of a snow storm (we've gotten a couple inches since this afternoon) and she just doesn't seem interested in going to the bathroom. We've tried taking her around the neighborhood for a walk, but didn't want to keep her out too long because of the cold. (The last time I took her out, she really didn't want to go, and kept trying to get back to the door, so we didn't stay out long.)

Any ideas? I'm heading to bed soon, and while we moved her crate into my room so I can hear her if she starts whining or making noises to go out, I'm worried she's going to have an accident.

  • Advice for adopting a first dog?

My family and I are starting to look at getting a dog in the nearish future. We've been looking at Petfinder to figure out what type of shelter/rescue dogs are available in our area, and to be honest, it's a little bit overwhelming. We know we want a small to medium dog (smaller than a Lab), preferably female and a young adult (not a puppy).

What advice do you have? What type of questions should we be asking the shelter/rescue?

Also, what stuff should we have at home before we adopt? I know we need food, food and water dishes, a leash and collar, brush, nail trimmer and a crate. What else?

We also have a cat in the house - any advice on getting the two to get along? (Granted, this cat never really got along with the older cat we had until we had to put her to sleep.)

(We also have my 7-year old nephew living with us - so any advice on easing the transition for the dog would be really helpful.) Thanks!

  • How will the bailout of the Mortgage Company affect people looking to buy their first house?

With all the bailouts of the mortgage companies that have happened in the last few weeks, how will that affect people in my position who are looking towards buying their first house in the somewhat near future?

I'm 31 years old and currently saving up money for a down payment on a house (and working hard at paying off all my debt at the same time). If everything goes somewhat smoothly (knock on wood), I should have about $10-$15K saved by the end of next year. I don't want anything super fancy, just a small house or condo, in a price range of $85K-$105K in the Midwest.

But with all these companies now needing help from the government, how will that affect my ability to get a mortgage? Is there anything in particular that I should be worrying over, or just hoping the economy improves over all?

  • Does Advil raise your blood pressure?

I've been taking Advil 2-3 times a day as part of the after-care regimen for a root canal I had done on Monday (as directed by the endodontist).

I was in the regular dentist office yesterday to begin the restoration work on a different tooth, and the dentist wouldn't do the procedure because my blood pressure was too high for novacaine. I'm trying to think through what could cause my blood pressure to be higher than normal, and the only thing I can think of is the Advil.

Do anyone know if taking advil raises your blood pressure?

  • Prince Caspian: Scene at the end of the credits?

Was there a scene at the end of the credits of Prince Caspian? I thought I heard something about one after I left the theater, but I'm not sure if I was overhearing the conversation right.

If there was one, could someone describe it? Thanks!

  • Sims 2 Bon Voyage - Fixing permanent sunburn?

Is there a way to fix a Sim that has developed a permanent sunburn on Sims 2? I have one sim that is driving me nuts - I had her sunbathing on vacation and she burned - and the burn has never faded. It's been long enough for her to get married and have kids that are now children, but she STILL has the sunburn.

Is there a cheat or hack that will let me change her skin tone back to normal?

(I have all the expansion packs and all but 1 stuff pack. All the packs have been patched except Free Time, since that patch was pulled because it was causing game issues.)

  • Problems with New Bright Radio Controlled Car?

I purchased a New Bright Ferrari F430 Radio Controlled car over the weekend, and I have been having problems with it.

I started charging the battery and got impatient - took it off after 1 hour and tried to see if the car would work (I was going out for the night, so I wasn't going to be able to play with it until the next day). The car only moved in a couple of weak spurts, but I figured that was because the battery was not charged. I put the battery back on the charger over night.

Next day, I can't get the car to work at all. The batter was on the charger for 20 hours or so, and nothing happened. I can't tell if the batter is loose in the holder (sometimes it looks as if the terminals don't match up). I have it on the right band (there are 4 choices) - both the car and the controller match. (I tried all 4 bands with no success.) I've checked everything I can think of - car turned on, batteries in the controller, etc.

Anyone have any ideas before I take it back to the store?

  • Reducing the appearance of a surgical scar?

I broke my arm over the summer, and had surgery to attach plates to the bones in my right forearm.

One of my scars has faded nicely, but the one that is on the most visible portion of my forearm (close to the elbow, in a direct line with my thumb) has developed extra scar tissue and is still fairly red. My doctor gave me a medical term for what happened with the scar, but I can't remember what it is.

What works best to make the redness of the scar fade? I know I'll have the bumpy scar tissue forever, but what can I do to make it less noticeable (especially now that we are heading towards summer)?

I've tried vitamin e oil and Mederma, with only moderate success. Anyone have any other remedies I can try?

  • Category Request?

Is there an area on Yahoo Answers for requesting additional categories?

I've been hanging out in the Singles-Dating thread a bit, and it's a more than a little frustrating sorting through all the teen and pre-teen angst looking for adult situations and dilemas.

Basically, I'm wondering if there is a way to request that certain areas be split, like the Singles-Dating thread into age brackets?

I realize that it won't catch all the questions, since people don't always file their questions in the right categories, but I just thought I would ask.

  • Who plays Second Life?

I've been thinking about joining Second Life, mostly just to explore and hang out with people. I'm not necessarily interested in the business/economic aspects of the game.

Is it easy to play and meet people? How does it work? Does it cost much money to set up a person? How much can you do without spending money?

Basically, I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the effort. Also, can you play it from any computer, or is there something you have to download? I have a PC at home that I'm sure can handle it, but can I also sign in from my Mac at work if I choose? I don't want to have to install anything on this computer, since it belongs to the company.

  • Question for fans of Hotel Babylon on BBC?

I've gotten hooked into the show Hotel Babylon on BBC America and I've got a question about the show.

Is it still in production in the UK? I think we have seen through season 2 here in the US - how far ahead is the show in Britain?

    Thanks!

  • Which is better for you?

I'm working on losing weight, and have started using a stationary bike that we have at home.

I've noticed in the 4 times that I have used the bike that I have been riding it that I can currently do about 25 minutes at a resistance setting of 6, until I have to stop because my legs are burning. Tonight I tried changing the resistance setting to 5 (easier) and I was able to go for 30 minutes and feel like I could have kept going for at least another 5 minutes (didn't have the time to though).

But which is better for building the cardio system and losing weight? The shorter, more intense workout or the longer, easier one? (Of course, my legs could just be getting stronger, which accounts for the longer time - but I haven't even been using the bike for a week yet, so I'm not sure how much that figures in.)
