Reducing the appearance of a surgical scar?

I broke my arm over the summer, and had surgery to attach plates to the bones in my right forearm.

One of my scars has faded nicely, but the one that is on the most visible portion of my forearm (close to the elbow, in a direct line with my thumb) has developed extra scar tissue and is still fairly red. My doctor gave me a medical term for what happened with the scar, but I can't remember what it is.

What works best to make the redness of the scar fade? I know I'll have the bumpy scar tissue forever, but what can I do to make it less noticeable (especially now that we are heading towards summer)?

I've tried vitamin e oil and Mederma, with only moderate success. Anyone have any other remedies I can try?

My guess is that your doctor called it a keloid. Some persons are more prone to develop them, some areas of the body are more keloid prone.

Cosmetic surgery sometimes helps but is expensive, and the keloid may recur. Certain types of pressure dressings are said to reduce the occurrence, but not once the keloid has formed, I think.

A medical cosmetologist can give you hints on how to mask the scar. Wish I had a better solution.

My sister got a tattoo over her surgical scar, I don't know if that is an option for you, but if it is, her scar is about 1 foot long and you can't even tell she has it.
