Is it true that restaurants in Italy are now smoke free?

I will be visiting Florence, and eating primarily in Oltrarno (Il Rifrullo and Cingiale Bianco to name a few) and wanted to see if they will be no smoking...

THANKS!

Yes, it was a pretty remarkable transition when the law went into force. Prior to that it was common to be sitting in a restaurant where many people were smoking. No smoking cars on trains were regularly ignored; I remember being on one train where the conductor making the no smoking announcement did so while smoking himself. However, as soon as the law went into effect, people started going outside the restaurants to smoke and respect the smoking rules on the trains now too.

In early January 2005, smoking was banned in restaurants, cafes and bars throughout Italy. I recently visited several different restaurants and everyone seems to be respecting the smoking ban. Rain or sunshine, everyone wanting to smoke went outside. In every establishment, non-smoking signs were clearly posted, along with information on the maximum fines. Yep, that's true. Like most countries in the European Union, Italy banned smoking in public places a few years ago. Although there are some pubs that will let you smoke if they are laid back enough...usually in student areas you'll find places you can smoke...but otherwise not.

Yes, the Italian law doesn't allow to smoke in restaurants...

You can smoke there only if there is a proper area for smokers, but restaurants usually haven't got it...
