Why does my Generac generator engine sputter and die when I turn off the choke?

I start it with full choke, run it at half choke and it runs well. It carries an electrical load well. I can run it like this for hours and it doesn't skip a beat. As soon as I try to move the choke from half to run (no choke) position the engine sputters and dies with and without a load on the engine.

The jets in the carburetor need cleaning. The engine isn't getting enough fuel. That is why it will run better with the choke on. The choke restricts the air. The carburetor needs to be removed, taken apart, soaked in a good parts cleaner and put back together with a rebuild kit. Check your fuel tank also to make sure it is clean and there is no water in it. Water will look like "blobs" on the bottom of the tank.

your generator just needs to have the valves cleaned and maybe adjusted, gennies run at an even pace for a long time which builds up soot in the valves,,allowing to much air in ,, or the valves may need adjusting which would cause the same thing,,,

Also besids carb and valve check, see if there is a gas line filter which needs changed.

Firstly ,drain any old gas out of tank and replace wth new gas.

    good luck

Your carburetor is not set correctly. The needles are not allowing enough gas to flow to the motor.
