R&P.. what was the last REALLY cool band OUTSIDE of your "normal" Genre that you discovered?

or were introduced to?

For instance I am mostly a metalhead, but i have discovered all kinds of great music, from Smiley introducing me to Jean Luc Ponty (Jazz Fusion ), top Mama Jamie showing me Rudimentary Peni ( Crust Punk ) , I have gotten to know a great number of great musicians.

How about you?

(links appreciated... lets step outside our comfort zones and just share some music, eh?)

MQ- Your "Favorite Genre"

MQ2- What Genre is this band?

MQ3- Are you pretty much Musically narrow, or are you Musically Promiscuous?

    MQ2: Sevendust & Isis

MQ3: A bit of both but I'm always looking for new music.

    Rudimentary Peni is awesome!

Um, The Faint is probably the most recent.

MA: I like a lot of different genres. Punk, Indie, 80s/90s alternative, folk...I could keep going.

MA2: Um, I'm not sure exactly. Dance-ish new wave, maybe.

MA3: Somewhere in between. I like a very wide variety of similar genres. But I'm not cool enough to be like, "There's a song from every genre that I can appreciate," because for me, unfortunately, it's not true.

Not sure about any bands but there was a song I heard last night. Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys. I've heard it before and I thought it was pretty awesome.

MQ- My favourite genre would be rock, and for me that includes metal is well seeing as it is a variation on rock anyway. On my ipod i have stuff ranging from the Beatles to Slipknot

MQ2- They would be hiphop (the old skool kind which is better)

MQ3- I like most music mainly old seeing as most new music coming out is comparable to the stuff that comes out my butt.

I too am a metalhead and always will be. However after numerous mentions on R&P I have checked out Sublime. I quite like them, they make me feel all mellow and relaxed.

    MA - Metal!!!

MA2 - I think Sublime is called Ska.

MA3 - I'm quite picky with music and narrow-minded. Metal is my lover and wife and I'm faithful if you get what I mean. I suppose my little bit of something on the side would be trance, alternative rock, classical. Everything else doesn't really evoke much emotion from me.

This is the 1st Sublime song I heard:

Actually she's a singer, I've been listening to her for a long time but only got really into her recently: Dusty Springfield.

    1. Old school metal

    2. Dusty? 60s pop/soul I guess.

    3. I am a musical whore. I have everything from Chocolate Rain to Machine Head and I'm currently deciding between buying some Kate Bush or Slayer.

I listen to a lot of progressive rock, hard rock/heavy metal, and new wave, but I've recently been introduced to this great music by Johnny Cash (who's country, if you didn't know already). I've also been listening to some Barry Manilow, which is really unusual for me. But an entire band, let's see...I guess it would be Styx, because I really don't like a lot of 'stadium' rock like that.

MQ - Probably progressive, like Genesis, Yes, ELP, that stuff.

MQ2 - Johnny Cash is country, Barry Manilow is pop, and Styx is arena rock.

MQ3 - I don't know if promiscuous is the right word, but I listen to TONS and TONS of different genres. Like I mentioned, heavy metal, hard rock, new wave, progressive rock, folk, classical, the blues, pop...everything, really.

Well, back in 2005, the best artist I started to listen to that was outside of the genre I usually listened to was country artist Brad Paisley. Up until I started listening to him, I barely listened to any country. Thanks to Paisley's great guitar work, I also became a fan of jazz (and many other country guitarists, including Redd Volkaert and Albert Lee).

Brad Paisley performing "The Nervous Breakdown" live:

Brad Paisley performing "Let the Good Times Roll live (the original version he recorded, although a cover, was performed as a duet with B.B. King--pay attention when the pedal steel does a solo with wah!):

Brad Paisley's "Cliffs of Rock City" (rock instrumental in tribute to Eric Johnson):

Brad Paisley's "Throttleneck" (my favorite instrumental of his):

Brad Paisley's video for "She's Everything" (one of his best solos):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR_NncIZo9s

Brad Paisley's "Turf's Up" (my favorite non-country instrumental of his; also, Paisley made the animation for this himself):

So, basically, Brad Paisley is an all-around great guitarist, no matter what genre he's playing!

MQ: either rock or country (I didn't like country at all, when I first started listening to Paisley)

MQ2: country (for the most part--only his instrumentals sometimes venture into other genres)

MQ3: Actually, I'm now quite open to many genres, including rock, country, blues and jazz and many of those genres' sub genres, including surf rock, western swing, bluegrass, delta blues, Texas blues, Chicago blues, gypsy jazz, etc.

I am having a huge brain cramp right now on the last band outside the norm that I discovered so I will just put down my favorite band like that. That band is Morcheeba. They're trip-hop and I've actually been listening to them for a while. Thanks to Skittles for showing me them! I love the lead singers voice and the overall calmness of it and how I can just chill and relax while listening to them.

    "The Sea"

    "Big Calm"

    "Over and Over"

    MQ: Deathcore

MQ2: If your talking about Morcheeba... Trip hop

MQ3: I like to think I have a very wide variety of tastes when it comes to music.

    MA2: Alternative

MA3: I am promiscuous, but I will never get into rap. I like to stay in the rock/alternative range. Rap is just garbage...
