"atheist", "scientist" used as plurals - wtf? If it ends in "-ist" you don't have to add the "S"?

Many people here on Y!A seem to think that if a word ends in "-ist" they don't have to add the "S". Why is that?

Update:

My apologies, "m&&m", I didn't see that question, as I was busy typing this one.

Update 2:

"??": please read the details, not just the title of this question.

    Looks like another spelling class might be necessary..

    For the same reason people pose their questions as abbreviations, with all kinds of bad spelling, like "Ppl plz hlp i hv 2 go 2 daktor for a fluu sht. i don't like pane what shud i do?"

    Now, I haven't seen this specific question yet, but this is very typical of questions I see both here, and in Computers.

    It makes my eyes hurt, and I feel like throwing up all over the keyboard when I see a question like this! (And I tell them to learn to spell, and quit using abbreviations.

    But, ICU8DBBQ.I8sm2 ;-}

    probably because it is easier to say, but it is incorrect. when you spell "atheist" or "scientist" and it's plural you have to add an "S", but when you are talking it sometimes sounds like you are not adding the "s" because it is easier to say. for example when i say " Look how many texts I have" I usually don't say "texts" I say "text" because it is easier to say. :-)

    Come to think of it, I myself got an F in English two years ago, when I was in class 9.

    Because those who speak this way are all home schooled by semi-literate Fundie parents.
