Does it take more energy to run or cycle a mile?

Or would it be the same?

As an old scientist, I suspect the cycle is more efficient overall. Once you have reached a certain speed no energy is used on freewheel or downhill. The critical feature is which point of energy transfer is more efficient tyre to ground or sole to ground. Must be the former. Overall the cycle was invented to get you there quicker and easier. As I write I become more convinced running requires more energy.

it takes up more energy to run, but this is only because it takes a lot longer to run a mile than cycle a mile. If you ran for 10 minutes, and then cycled for 10 minutes (constantly peddaling when you cycle) you will use up more energy cycling.

    Running requires more energy.

A bicycle is actually one of the most efficient machines for travel ever invented. It requires a lot less energy than anything else available.

more to run, less to cycle

the bike does a lot of the 'carying' work

takes the same energy to walk or run a mile thogh

theoretically it takes the same amount (same mass, same distance), in reality it takes much more to run it
