Is it a sin to wish someone dead?
Last night on "Fringe," (great show, btw) there was a character who was a reverse empath. That is, rather than feel another's emotions, he projected his own emotions onto innocent people.
When he was happy, it was as if the entire world lit up. And when he was depressed, those around him felt as though they had been sucked into a black hole, a dark pit of despair.
Anyway, the man was suicidal, angry, etc, and because of this, others near him were driven to either kill either themselves or those around them, depending on his emotions at the time.
The character Walter, in attempting to solve this mystery, stated that it appeared this man was wishing others dead. Which got me to wondering ...
Christianity teaches that to murder is a sin. But what about wishing ill will or death upon another person? Is the thought as damning as the action?
As always, thanks in advance for your answers.
(((Gorgeous)))
Early morning redundancy alert ... "either kill either themselves ..."
My bad. Just woke up. *blush*
Milo brings up a good point: The harder we try to clear something from our minds, the more frequently it seems to enter.
All of these answers are excellent -- not a bad one in the lot. I'm so inept at choosing best. *blush* This one goes to vote.
Thanks to all.

No it is not a sin ,God knows you can not say do not think and you don't.If the the person you are wishing it on has done terrible things to you, hurt a lot of people even their own child, lied ,cheated and stole and has no conscience God understands. the sin is his not dieing and keep it up just less sin on him.I am lucky my father taught me the good or bad does not come from others or a church , but from within.I just happen to feel the person and everyone else would be better off. Iam not a church goer do not beleive in them there is more bad then good in them.

Yes, our thoughts are powerful. To me sin means missing the mark, It is an old archery term. We really are all of one mind. So when we wish something bad for someone else it does come back to us in some way. A good example if you are aware of politics in the USA, was when people prayed that Obama's convention speech which took place outdoors would be ruined by bad weather. Well, instead of it being ruined it ended up magnificent. Then when McCain had his speech they have all kinds of disasters but the big weather one was a storm called Gustav. So Do Unto Others means treat others as you would like to be treated cause we are all one energy, one life, from the same power, the same source. Jesus spoke about loving our enemies & making them friends. There is a reason for everything Jesus told us to do...What I do everyday is sit & meditate for a while & also sit & pray for a while. I focus on one thing everyday & today it is harmony but all the qualities of God are what I focus on each day. I may say a prayer & put in that I am so thankful for the peace in my life, for my prosperity, for the love my life is filled with including my love for myself & God, my family, any strangers I haven't even met yet. I may go down a list of people I know or even a story on the news. If I seeing a missing child I may pray knowing that where this child is God is. That the family feels God's love & peace. I know all my thoughts are prayers so I send out the highest & best that I have....if you feel negative feelings towards another, ask yourself what you would rather have instead of this feeling of fear. What is it you fear about this person? What are they doing? If they are taking something from you, know that you are safe & secure. If they irratate you, what is the opposite of irritate, how about soothe you. Change your mind & you will see your life change.

No, it's a sin to kill someone, but it's not a sin to wish that they would die.

It is not necessarily sin but us certainly not good for you to be guilty of the thought and of course one should always be careful what one wishes for. My nan uttered a curse wishing someone dead and to her utter horror he dropped down dead there and then with a massive heart attack, the poor old lady never got over the shock and guilt, even though the doctor said it could have happened anywhere anytime he was so ill.

It's called "premeditated".
We have the power within to literally die, if one loses all hope and purpose in life. But this only applies to self.
To seek the willful death of another is the same as acting upon this desire, according to the Lord God.
Sin is sin and is not measured by God in comparison.

Psalm 94:11 " The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity. " Matthew 15:19 " For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:" James 2:4 "Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?"

Yours is a fine question - rare around here.
And the answer is yes if you are speaking in reference to the God of the Bible.
It would be wise for the Christian to, as it all things, submit their will and mind to the Lord.
It is in our thoughts and hearts where sin starts
Incidentally, it is flat out impossible for a deist to be confident of anything having to do with God or "gods" for the deist believes that if a god exists, he is not involved in human affairs, has not revealed himself and hence, not knowable.
What the apostle Paul says addressed this (your question) long ago.
Rom 7:14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
Rom 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
Rom 7:16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
Rom 7:17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
Rom 7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
Rom 7:19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do-this I keep on doing.
Rom 7:20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
Rom 7:21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
Rom 7:22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law;
Rom 7:23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.
Rom 7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
Rom 7:25 Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

It's not a sin. But perception is reality. Like Walter said, how you feel will determine your reality.

It's human nature not to like someone. Ask yourself: What is the purpose in wishing someone was dead? There is no purpose. You can wish but it doesn't mean it's going to happen. Therefore, I do not think it's a sin.
Please do not think i'm saying its okay to kill someone because its not :P lol
