Why after 17yrs in a relationship would a person say he was a loner but won't talk about it further?
He has been at home on his own for much of the time and now I have retired and we are under each others feet etc

Anybody who's been in a relationship for 17 years is NOT, by definition, a loner.

Translation: I want out and maybe there is someone else.
I think the person either wants to look, is looking or has found someone else. The would be loner might need to be honest with them self. I watched a friend tell his wife this same thing and I think he really believed that was what he wanted. He thought the single life looked really great. He was dating someone within a few months and living with someone shortly after. He was definitely not a loner. I think that was after 22 or 23 years of marriage. Now (about 3 years later) he feels it was a dumb move...

He is done with you and not man enough to come out and say it. He wants you to be so unhappy you will leave. Do both of you that favor and get on with your life.
