This is hard to explain, so since you know myself and Lee, it's like this:
Meetup.com -the site does the work for you based on your interests and location preference.
For example:
Lee joined and registered for one of many rock climbing meet-up/event groups in Houston, TX. The group organizer arranges all weekly "meet-ups" for any and all rock climbing events (at gyms, or even outings) and then sends out email invites to all member of his/her event group.
Lee can either decline or accept the invite - but if he accepts - then he needs to show up. If he finds he cannot, he simply emails the organizer and lets him/her know he cannot attend. Lee has gone on a few invites and really enjoyed it. He's met others with similar interests and learned about different places here in Houston to climb.
You can ignore the email invites - they are sent by the group organizer and he/she doesn't care if you don't reply - although it's nice to do so - even if it's to decline.
You choose how often you get the meet up notices. Most meet-ups are free - though some carry a small cost - not to compensate the event organizer - but to cover the expenses associated for that event (ie., a day pass to attend the rock climbing event - charged by the gym where the event will occur.)
Did this make sense? I've signed up for event notices and never attended one. But I know what's out there (well, here in Houston...)

knk, it depends on where you live in Houston and what you call fun. One of my favorite things to do is check out the many <a href="http://midtownlive.blogspot.com/2009/04/events-in-... free events in Houston.</a> There are some free things to do this weekend listed at Midtown Live.

Walk around downtown, Kemah/the beach, Barry Center/Reliant Stadium/Toyota Center/George R. Brown Convention Center, laser tag (funnest thing you will ever do if you go to that big Track 21 place up close to Katy), movies, mall hop (Galleria, Memorial, Katy Mills, Willowbrooke), roller rink, museum district, or check one of the libraries. Most around Houston have bulletin boards with events going on in the near future.

Sure enough. Now go straight down the highway til you get to the clown exit, get off there. At the bottom of the ramp go right. About 3 miles make the turn onto lollipop mountain. Follow that all the way up. At the very tippy top is a very special store where you can find anything you need. They do specialize in flame throwers. From a large one right down to a minature one. Have fun at your picnic and don't do anything I wouldn't do. ROFLMFAO

I love riding my bike around The Woodlands Waterway and making a stop at Goose Acres for one of their delicious Irish beers.
