How is belief in Hell not like a battered wife syndrom?

God made Hell. God gave us the option to go to there and not heaven. He doesn't like rebellion. I'll burning for an eternity because I rebelled. I deserve it.

Battered wife: My husband beats me when I back talk. If I don't back talk, he won't beat me. I now have two black eyes because I talked too much. I deserved it.

How is this healthy? How is such a god worthy of praise?

Update:

I'll burn for*

Whoops.

ya know, as much as i wanted to make a joke about how hell isn't real, i can't make any jokes on this one. i was wrapping my mind around different ways of saying that hell doesn't hurt anyone because it isn't real, but in fact it does, and it has! from those who were murdered for being sinners, to the emotional scars worn by so many children, hell has harmed more then could be counted. the results of growing up in a society that holds this concept high are bad enough in the way they damage our ability to relate to one-another, but when you add the rest in, it goes well beyond insanity.

  • A good question, i agree T has given the best answer so far.

When i have asked this question to people before the only argument i have received is "God" is held to a different standard since he created us unlike the abusive husband.

So i ask the question again but use the notion of an Abusive father, this just leads to the argument that "God" has authority over all and he gets to make the rules. And since the bible states god is perfect and just, this means that the rule must be fair. Which does sicken me.

I do sincerely hope this is an abstract question and that you do not have two black eyes.

Source(s): " This contradiction lies here: they wish God, and they wish humanity. They persist in connecting two terms which, once separated, can come together again only to destroy each other. They say in a single breath: "God and the liberty of man," "God and the dignity, justice, equality, fraternity, prosperity of men" — regardless of the fatal logic by virtue of which, if God exists, all these things are condemned to non-existence. For, if God is, he is necessarily the eternal, supreme, absolute master, and, if such a master exists, man is a slave; now, if he is a slave, neither justice, nor equality, nor fraternity, nor prosperity are possible for him. In vain, flying in the face of good sense and all the teachings of history, do they represent their God as animated by the tenderest love of human liberty: a master, whoever he may be and however liberal he may desire to show himself, remains none the less always a master. His existence necessarily implies the slavery of all that is beneath him. Therefore, if God existed, only in one way could he serve human liberty — by ceasing to exist. " -Mikhail Bakunin

It's even worse. The wife still has a way out. If he's not gonna torture you, he'll dump you in his Happy Lalaland, and bore you for eternity.

The wife has the option to file a restraining order. I wonder what happens if I file one against God.

I think T has the BA

I'm a little emotional as I can think of people who are affected like T has referred to

edit: Have you heard that some think God will make an evil good like rape is good if god does it and so is abuse, murder etc?

The battered wife eventually escapes the husband in death or divorce.

God is much worse than an abusive spouse, he NEVER lets people go.

Your husband beats you when you talk back huh? When my wife starts talking out of her @ss, I just stick it in her butt. That shuts her up.

I try not to think too much about archaic ideas created by churches to instill fear into their followers to keep power.
