Is putting your e break on when you park necessary?

I have heard rumors that putting your e break on when you park improves break performance and reliabilitiy over time. Should I always put my e break on when I park my car on flat surfaces? I know its a good idea when on a hill to take the stress of the breaks. Is this true? Should my e break always be on when parked?

I have never had a car with an e break.

I have never had a car with an e brake.

I have never had a car with an emergency brake.

I have had cars with hand operated parking brakes.

I have had cars with foot operated parking brakes.

I always use the parking brake when parking, as that is the purpose of the parking brake. You will find understanding improves when you use the correct names.

Well, maybe because I grew up in the hills, I have always used my parking brake when I park. Even on flat ground. Two reasons; I had two different cars. One a 56 chevy (auto) and the other a 65 GTO (4 speed). Excuse me while I shed a tear. If I didn't put the auto's e brake on first and then put it into park, it could put a bind on the tranny, making it nearly impossible to get into gear. With the four speed, I would put on the e brake and make sure it held before I put it in to gear. It insured that the vehicle was being held by the rear brakes in case they should pop out of gear.

You dont need it on flat ground.

I would highly recommend using it on hills.

When parking on hills, most manuals show that you must put the car in neutral while holding down on the brake pedal, then engage the parking brake, then put the car in Park.

I had a 5 speed mustang and it WOULD ROLL if I didnt put the Parking brake on....even if I was in 1st or 2nd gear.

Parking brakes DEFINATELY hold the car and lock it in place.

Its a good idea to put it on when parking on hills, there is a gear or piece in the transmission that can get damaged if you continuely park on hills without using your parking brake.....cant remember what its called though!

If your parking on flat ground, you DEFINATELY DONT need to use the parking brake....if the car is Park, or 1st,2nd or even Reverse, its still PLENTY to hold the car in place.

Some people do it as a safety precaution encase their car is hit while parked.

If your car is an automatic there is really no need to use the E-brake except for peace of mine. Brakes are not used for parking, the transmission locks when put into park (hence park) and it keeps from rolling.

If you have a manual transmission and keep it in neutral then the E-brake is a necessity.

When you park on a hill your breaks don't hold it in park. The transmission does.

You need to always use it because each time that you do it will to some degree self adjust itself and the more that you don't use it the less it will self adjust plus it may not work correctly when the time comes that you need it.........
